In this course, we will introduce, apply, and debate a number of organization theories that are considered central in both understanding organizational phenomena and deriving managerial implications related to the design of organizations.

Learning outcomes

The fundamental learning objective is to allow students to evaluate the same organizational phenomena from multiple theoretical perspectives. Each of the theoretical approaches discussed in this course focuses on different aspects, aims at explaining different processes and mechanisms, and derives different implications.

Students will be in a position to choose the theoretical perspective most appropriate for evaluating the situation at hand, and to derive appropriate alternatives for (managerial) action.
Teaching/learning method(s)

Teaching and learning approach:

  • Lectures and lecturettes
  • Individual study of original literature
  • Group work and presentations
  • Discussion
  • Critical reflection
Assessment

  • Group work 40% (paper 30%, presentation 10%)
  • Individual reflection on reading assignment (20%)
  • Final exam (40%)

Prerequisites for participation and waiting lists
For students within the Management master program: Successful completion of the course "Introduction to Management"

Mandatory attendance

  • Continuous assessment courses (PI) have an obligation to attend.

  • If there is an important reason to be absent, a maximum of 25% of the total duration of the course can be compensated by additional work. For cumulative absences of more than 25%, the course must be repeated. A confirmation (eg. a medical certificate) must be provided for the absence.

According to the examination regulations of the WU, important reasons are those which are outside the disposition of the student (illness, accident, death of a close relative). Professional obligations are not considered as an important reason within the meaning of the examination regulations, because they are in the disposition of the students.
