This course is the Research and Policy seminar to the specialization on Money, Credit and Finance. In this course students gain hands-on-experience through an independent research project that comprises writing a seminar thesis and giving a presentation of the research outcome.

These projects should be related to any of the broad topics discussed in the lecture-based course https://learn.wu.ac.at/dotlrn/classes/pool/5976.19s/syllabus/, e.g.,

  1. Conventional and unconventional monetary policy
  2. The monetary transmission mechanism
  3. The New Keynesian model for policy analysis
  4. Financial frictions in macroeconomic models
  5. Inflation forecasting

Students are welcome to come up with their own topics.  

Learning outcomes

Students should learn to apply their knowledge acquired in the lecture-based part of the specialization to a precise research question in the area of monetary economics, international macroeconomics and monetary policy analysis. Strong seminar papers are welcome to be the basis for writing an MSc. thesis in this field.

Attendance requirements

Attendance is compulsory. A maximum of 2 course hours (1 absence) are allowed to be missed.

Teaching/learning method(s)

In this part of the specialization, students present their research outline (labeled initial presentation) and findings / research results (final presentation end of June). 

Assessment

Grading is based on

  • active participation
  • intial presentation
  • final presentation
  • term paper

Strong term-papers can be extended to a MSc. thesis
