This course examines the design and implementation of corporate strategies addressing diversity-related issues and explores the essential components of strategic diversity management. It focuses on organizational diversity analysis, assessing whether, and if so how deeply, DEI is embedded in the organization and how strategically it is prioritized, and on DEI planning as a driver of organizational change. The course also addresses DEI evaluation and data reporting as key tools for monitoring progress and informing strategic decision-making. Recognizing that diversity management is a process of organizational change, we will analyze real cases of resistance to diversity initiatives and evaluate both the consequences of such resistance and strategies managers can use to address it. The relationship between an inclusive organizational environment and perceptions of organizational justice will also be explored, particularly in the context of resistance. Additionally, the course will scrutinize both individual and organizational learning processes related to diversity management.

Throughout the course, students will apply their knowledge through case studies, real-world examples, and discussions with experts in the field.

Learning outcomes

After completing this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify what an effective diversity strategy should contain.
  • Understand how to design and implement diversity strategies and gain a deeper understanding of diversity management as a process of organizational change, as well as the consequences of resistance to diversity measures.
  • Evaluate the implementation of corporate strategies that deal with diversity management, and reflect on the processes of implementation for these.

The course will also promote critical reflection and judgment, through both independent work and group work.

Attendance requirements

Simple attendance is a basic requirement for continuous assessment courses (prüfungsimmanenten Lehrveranstaltungen (PI-LV)).

Should there be an important reason for absence, then a maximum of 20% of the entire course duration can be missed. In case of more than 20% absence, the course must be repeated. Confirmation (for example, a medical certificate) must be submitted for absenteeism.

According to the WU's examination regulations, any absences that are beyond the student's disposition (illness, accident, death of a close relative) are important reasons. Vocational obligations are not considered an important reason in the sense of the examination regulations, since these are at the disposition of the students.
