Paradoxes and unintended consequences in sustainable operations and supply chain management

Paradoxes and unintended consequences are a natural part of sustainable operations and supply chain management (OSCM). We design, produce and deliver products, services and solutions to solve today’s problems while hoping not to cause new, more severe problem. By anticipating unintended consequences and applying a paradox mindset, we can find better solutions to avoid these new problems and learn how to deal with and manage complex issues. This seminar will guide students towards an in-depth understanding of, and the ability to critically evaluate, paradoxes and unintended consequences. It will for example cover the following components:

- An introduction to paradox theory in management contexts

- Reflection on the unintended consequences of OSCM strategies

- Critical engagement and discussion of the related body of academic literature

- The multi-dimensionality of sustainability and sustainable OSCM performance

- Paradoxes, tensions and unintended consequences in the context of the Global South

- Paradoxes, tensions and unintended consequences in international supply chains
