This course aims to help graduate students in the strategy field to get familiar with both sides of the review process: as a reviewer to comment on other scholars’ work and as an author to address comments offered by reviewers. This course uses real paper submissions to top-tier strategy journals for exercises.

Meeting time 1: overview

In the meeting, we will discuss overall issues in the review process. We will discuss key consideration in reviewing papers, as well as challenges and possible solutions for authors to address reviewer comments.

Student study time 1 : exercise as a reviewer

A prior real paper submission (Paper 1) will be shared with students. Students will write a review for the paper (up to 3 pages, double space) and email their reviews to the professor before the next meeting.

Meeting time 2:

In the meeting, we will discuss and compare students’ reviews. We will also compare students’ reviews and the actual reviews provided by the journal reviewers.

Student study time 2: exercise as a reviewer

A prior real paper submission (Paper 2) will be shared with students. Students will write a review for the paper (up to 3 pages, double space) and email their reviews to the professor before the next meeting.

Meeting time 3:

In the meeting, we will discuss and compare students’ reviews. We will also compare students’ reviews and the actual reviews provided by the journal reviewers.

Student study time 3: exercise as an author

A prior real paper submission (Paper 3) and the associated reviewer comments and editor’s decision letter will be shared with students. Students will develop a revision plan (up to 3 pages, double space) and email the plan to the professor before the next meeting.

Meeting time 4:

In the meeting, we will discuss students’ revision plans and share the authors’ actual revisions.

Student study time 4: exercise as an author

Paper 4 and the associated reviewer comments and editor’s decision letter will be shared with students. Students will develop a revision plan (up to 3 pages, double space) and email the plan to the professor before the next meeting.

Meeting time 5:

In the meeting, we will discuss students’ revision plans and share the authors’ actual revisions. We will also review and share students’ learning experience as a reviewer and an author.

Learning outcomes

Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

- understand the key considerations in the academic review process;

Active participation in discussions and presentations is required.

If you are unable to attend a session due to unforeseeable circumstances, you need to inform your lecturer before the session takes place.

Teaching/learning method(s)
  • Learning through a combination of in-person meetings and self study.
  • In-person meetings: Five sessions focusing on different core pillars.
  • Self-study: Students will engage in independent exercises between meetings, writing reviews and revision plans.
Assessment

The final course grade is based upon the evaluation of the following assessment assignments:

  • Oral participation during all sessions (20%)
  • Reviewer Exercises (40%): Evaluation based on the quality and depth of reviews submitted for Papers 1 and 2.
