This course examines how artificial intelligence is reshaping business models, and equips students to redesign one themselves. It opens with a theoretical foundation covering innovation and business model fundamentals, core strategy frameworks, and the economic and competitive implications of generative AI and AI agents. Students learn a range of tools and techniques — including AI-based tools — to assess and refine business models.
Building on this input, teams of 4–5 students select an existing company and take apart one of its business models for a specific target group: analyzing its current state, identifying how AI could change it, and testing the assumptions behind their proposed redesign through real-world validation. Students use AI tools throughout this process and reflect critically on how they used them. The course closes with each team presenting a business model innovation recommendation to the class.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Explain how and why artificial intelligence is changing business models and competitive advantage
Apply a range of tools and techniques — including AI-based tools — to assess and refine a business model
Identify concrete opportunities for AI-enabled business model innovation
Use generative AI tools effectively and critically as part of a real analytical and strategic workflow
Design and conduct methodical validation of business assumptions
Communicate a business model innovation recommendation persuasively to a real business audience
Attendance is mandatory for all parts of the course. Students who anticipate being unable to attend any session must contact the instructor in advance.
The course combines expert input with hands-on practice and team-based project work. It involves:
Lecture and case discussion
Hands-on practice with strategy frameworks and AI tools
Team-based project work on a real, existing company
Real-world validation of business model assumptions
Final presentation of the business model analysis and innovation proposal
50% Final Slide Deck: Business Model Analysis and Innovation Proposal (group grade)
25% Presentation (individual grade)
20% Class Participation (individual grade)
5% AI Usage and Reflection Report (individual grade)
Bonus points can be earned for creative solutions in testing assumptions (e.g., building and testing a prototype).
