This course addresses the practical application of quantitative methods and software tools to solve current Supply Chain and Operations Management problems. All sessions are held as BYOD classes, centered on implementing and applying spreadsheet and optimization tools to business problems in (up to) three areas:
- Supply Chain Network Design
- Production Planning and Scheduling
- Supply Chain Risks and Risk Management (depending on progress)
Upon completion, students can (1) explain the theoretical methods underlying core SCOM problems, (2) implement and apply appropriate software tools to solve these problems, and (3) analyse, assess, and critically argue the validity and limitations of the results.
Attendance is required in all sessions. Absence in one session is tolerated if a reasonable excuse is given before the session.
Application-oriented sessions in which students work on their own devices. Each content session pairs the underlying theory (method) with hands-on implementation in a software tool.
Session 1: Basics in Excel and virtual PC-Rooms
Session 2: Basics in Linear Optimization with Excel
Session 3: Network Planning
Session 4: Aggregated Production Planning
Session 5: Lot Sizing Optimization
Session 6: Repetitorium
Assessment consists of five in-class quizzes and a final exam, for a maximum of 100 points.
- In-class quizzes (60 points)
- From Session 2 to Session 6, each session opens with a 30-minute BYOD quiz on the previous session's content, so every topic is assessed one week after it is taught. Each quiz is worth up to 15 points. Only the best four of five quizzes count toward the grade.
- Final exam (40 points)
- A BYOD exam covering the full course, held in Session 7.
- A minimum of 16 points (i.e. 16/40 = 40%) must be reached in the exam in order to pass the course.
The following grading scheme will be applied:
- 1: 90 points or more
- 2: 80 points or more
- 3: 70 points or more
- 4: 60 points or more
