Autonomous Driving: A Case Study in Responsible AI

This seminar uses autonomous driving as a real-world case to explore responsible AI in Autonomous Intelligent Systems (AIS). Students are introduced to the technology behind autonomous vehicles, its real capabilities and limitations, and the ethical, societal and political questions it raises. In a collaborative case study, students evaluate the technology and its impact in a concrete scenario.

By the end of this seminar, students will have gained a deeper understanding of autonomous driving as a case for responsible technology and be able to generate a first analysis of ethical and societal implications of AI systems. They will systematically identify stakeholders, and evaluate trade-offs in technology decisions.

Students will also practice structured argumentation and collaborative decision-making in a complex technology scenario.

Standard FS (=”Forschungsseminar”) attendance policy applies. Attendance in the first unit and overall for 80% of the time is required. Attendance in the first unit is mandatory (unqualified absence will result in deregistration from the course).

This course is a 2-day block seminar (17-18 December 2026) combining practitioner input, group work, and exercises. Day 1 focuses on technology understanding and societal dimensions. Day 2 centres on ethical assessment, trade-off analysis, and collaborative decision-making. A seminar paper deepens the analysis individually. An optional Q&A session supports students in preparing their papers. Submission deadline: tba
