This course will provide students withe a fundamental understanding of international human resource management (IHRM) and its role and functions in the particular context of internationalising small- and medium-sized enterprises. Based on an overview of the strategic role of IHRM and its core functions (e.g., recruitment, selection, performance management, etc.) the course will allow for an in-depth engagement with several core functions and aspects of IHRM in the specific context of internationalising SMEs. Intensive work on case studies will allow for a direct application of theoretical models to managerial problems, which will be complented by recommended readings on the subject area.
Upon completion of this course, the students should be able to
- explain the strategic importance and functions of IHRM in the context of SMEs
- understand current trends and issues in the management of HR in the context of internationalising SMEs
- critically reflect and assess the usefulness of theoretical models that explain different aspects of IHRM (in SMEs)
- succinctly and convincingly present potential solutions to managerially relevant problems of IHRM in SMEs
Students are required to attend at least 80% of the sessions (including online sessions).
The course
- consists of lectures on key topics related to IHRM in SMEs, team coaching sessions, as well as group presentations and discussions
- aimsto develop the autonomous and team-based developement of analyses of current issues related to IHRM in the context of SMEs
- supports the application of knowledge to practically relevant managerial problems

Written final exam (1 hour) (30%)
