Class objective(s) (learning outcomes)
The globalisation of many businesses has lead to an increasingly strong linkage of international value added processes. With this development the management of materials, information and cash flows is becoming the decisive USP. The supply chain management approach for increasing the performance of the supply-chain network is an important factor in today’s business. The objective of the course is to prepare the students to manage global supply chains. Therefore we will offer theoretical as well as practical insights into global supply chains with the focus on international supply chain design, transportation and logistics. The course deals at first with the illustration of the management challenges in present and in the future and with the definition of supply chain management. In the second part the management of networks is discussed. After this a closer look is taken at some supply chain management strategies like efficient consumer response, cross-border inventory management or collaborative planning, forecasting and replenishment. Methods of coordination of activities in an interorganizational network will also be discussed.
The third part will be taught by Prof. Macher, Member of the Management Board of Rail Cargo Austria, an internationally active total logistics service provider, the logistics subsidiary of the ÖBB (Austrian State Railways).
The students shall have a basic knowledge in logistics management. For the introduction into supply chain management a prereading of about 100 pages is absolutely necessary.
