- Class objective(s) (learning outcomes)
- CLIP examines the key regional and policy factors responsible for successful Porterian' strategies of corporate location and asset deployment in a globalizing Dunning' economy. Corporate strategists continually re-evaluate the worldwide setting in which their assets and corporate functions are strategically deployed. Expanded global trade and increasingly inclusive WTO policies complicate such decisions by encouraging scale-efficient production and related functions at optimal locations, where optimality itself remains a dynamically defined concept. At the same time, nations and regions compete with each other for such investment by developing superior local business and investment conditions (e.g., CREDO-seminar) and by offering incentives to relocating firms. CLIP is an optional topic within the Institutes Globalisation and Regional Development specialization sequence. Format: in all respects a U.S. university-style course. Students are expected to read assignments in advance of class discussions, be prepared to engage in informed, often impromptu, discussion of concepts from literature, cases or lectures, and submit assigned class projects on-time. Attendance at each class meeting is expected. Grades will reflect student performance in all activities, which are spread evenly throughout the semester. Typical class profile includes WU-Wien and exchange students.
