Class objective(s) (learning outcomes)
The aim of this course is to give an overview of economic transformation in Central and Eastern Europe from communism to capitalism, largely covering the last 25 years. The focus will be on the dynamic and even dramatic changes in the region’s banking sectors which have produced very different reform paths in the 14 largest countries, from the Czech Republic and Croatia in the West to Russia and Uzbekistan in the East. Aspects of the current financial crisis are dealt with; also, a short presentation of the work of a country analyst at the Oesterreichische Nationalbank is given. The course is held for half of a semester, covering six hours every two weeks (5 units, Blockveranstaltung, korrespondierend mit LV Österreich und Europa).

Teaching and learning method(s)
Units 1 to 4 are lectures by the lecturer, also giving practical job knowledge; students have the possibility to participate (ask questions). Then participants give presentations on what they have heard, enriched by the fruits of their own reading.

Full presence at the course, active participation, positive evaluation of the presentation.
