The International Business Project is designed as a real-life learning experience for students. It provides students with a unique opportunity to gain insights into corporate practice of an international player. Student teams solve a real management problem as a one-term activity tutored by university faculty and the company.

Project title: Employees‘ Engagement for Sustainability - Improving a company’s competitive edge

Project brief: OMV aims to actively involve its employees into the implementation of its sustainability strategy "Resourcefulness" across all levels of the organization. The aim of this project is to provide a solid basis for the planning of future measures and and positioning of OMV's employee engagement. The project includes international benchmarking work, evaluations, KPI proposals, and the development of strategic recommendations. 

Project start: 16 March 2015

Project end: 1 June 2015

Company information: With Group sales of EUR 42.41 bn and a workforce of around 27,000 employees in 2013, OMV Aktiengesellschaft is Austria’s largest listed industrial company. The company supplies more than 200 mn people with energy. OMV’s Exploration & Production division has a balanced portfolio and operates in around 20 countries across four continents.

Please note: All information are subject to change! Upon the end of course registration and as soon as all dates have been confirmed by the corporate partner, students who have chosen this project will receive specifics about the project scope including NDA requirements and a detailed schedule including all mandatory meetings via email.

Learning outcomes

The aims of the project are

  • to investigate and structure a complex strategic management challenge that an international company faces
  • to provide an in-depth analysis of the current status
  • to provide strategic solutions that are viable under the given organizational conditions

After completing this project students will have

  • gained insights into what challenges an international company faces in its management environment and how it deals with such issues
  • learned how to analyze and structure real-life management situations in a global context
  • combined and applied several theoretical concepts to the international management challenge
  • received feedback from practitioners on the outcomes of their analyses and the viability of their recommendations

Students will have the ability to
  • develop critical thinking and defend their arguments in class and in front of practitioners
  • organize teamwork and "sell" their solutions in a professional way, through solid presentation skills and support of suitable media
Teaching/learning method(s)
The sessions involve a mix of presentations, discussions, and workshops. Consequently, attendance and participation in class discussions will be critical to the success of the project and will determine your grade. In order to support your work throughout the project, you will have plenty of opportunities to get qualified input and feedback.
Assessment

Students' grades will be determined by the results of their

  • peer reviews (individual assessment)
  • faculty grades (individual assessment)
  • presentations (group assessment)

Attendance in all scheduled presentation, coaching, and corporate partner sessions is a firm requirement for the successful completion of the project.
