This course in introduction to the political economy of the environment – that is, the analysis of how scarce environmental and natural resources are allocated not only among competing ends, but also among competing individuals and groups in society. The first part of the course will discuss the relationship between socio-economic inequality and environmental inequality. The second part will focus on current debates in environmental economics, and add distributional considerations to environmental economic theory and policy

Learning outcomes

The course will provide a background in current debates in environmental economics, and add distributional considerations to environmental economic theory and policy. The course will help PhD students interested in both inequality and environmental degradation develop their own research ideas in theses fields.
