Contents
This reading course reflects on the importance of Karl Polanyi for research in the field of social-ecological and politico-economic development. Reading will focus on "The Great Transformation" and other texts from Polanyi and scholars who deepened Polanyi´s approach.
Learning outcomes

After finishing the course, students will be able to

* understand the importance of history and institutions for socioeconomic development,

* distinguish between a formal and a substantive understanding of economics,

* better understand the role of liberalism in political and economic history of the 19th and 20th century,

* better understand similarities and differences between the great depression after 1929 and the current crisis,

* apply Polanyi´s theories, concepts and historical interpretation to problems of socioecological development.



Teaching/learning method(s)
This reading course will be based on text from and about Karl Polanyi, esp. "The Great Transformation".
Assessment

* written presentation and comments on chapters (30%)

* participation in class (20%)

* seminar paper on "Similarities and differences between the current crisis and the crisis of the 1930s"  (50%)
