The objective of this course is to explore challenges in procurement, design and operation of IT systems.

Outsourcing strategies and cloud computing promise cost savings and scalable solutions but there are also costs and risks for the organization like loss of human capital and specific knowledge, questions of data protection or security issues just to mentions some aspects which need in depth analysis.

We will also discuss security threats in a business environment from the perspective of a CISO who has to balance business requirements, innovation and security and has to understand possibilities and limitations of technology.


Learning outcomes
In this course students learn to look at typical business decisions from a holistic approach rather than focusing only on technical details. They will develop an understanding for challenges in procurement decisions and security issues as an integrated part of all kind of projects

Case studies will focus on topics like cloud computing, intrusion detection/prevention,mobile devices and BYOD and will be discussed and analyzed on criteria like:

  •     Business requirements like costs, time to market, scaling issues, ...
  •     Organizational aspects
  •     Technical implications
  •     Human ressources
  •     Legal requirements
  •     Soft facts like motivation and awareness of employees
Teaching/learning method(s)
This course will be run as a combination of lectures, discussions, and presentations

  •     Substantial classroom discussion is encouraged and expected
  •     All students are required to present a case study (alone or as part of group)
  •     In addition, there will be a written exam on July 1st (one hour) covering all the readings provided and items disucced during the course.

Assessment
In-class exam: (50%) This exam will include questions from readingmaterial that has not necessarily been addressed in class.

Ongoing participation: (10%) in-class participation, activity inclassroom work and preparation of home works

Case Study: (40%) Written and presented case study
