It is more imperative than ever for organizationst o engage in human resource management on an international scale. Contemporary managers face challenges while working in a different national and cultural environment. This course addresses the opportunities and dilemmas that managers face when working in multicultural and global environments. It is designed to increase managers' effectiveness in identifying, understanding, and managingthe cultural components of management, recognizing cultural differences in managerial style, communicating across cultures, creating cultural synergy, managing globally competent people, entry/re-entry, managing ethically across cultures, and understanding, managing, and valuing diversity. This course will cover the management issues which have implications on international HRM decisions, including; cross-cultural negotiations, international dimensions of leadership, motivation, team work, and communicating with people of different cultural environment. Teaching methods include lectures, experiential exercises, group discussions, presentations and cases.
Learning outcomes
The main learning objective for this course is to gain knowledge (theory andresearch) and skills (practice and applications) in the management of people inc ontemporary organizations. After the completion of this course, the participants will be able to have:

An understanding of the human resource management and organizational behavior issues from an inter-cultural perspective rather than purely Western perspective.
An increased ability to conceptualize personal and professional issues related to human resource management across the cultures.
The expertise in the management of interpersonal behavior concerning the cultural variations found within multi-national and international corporations.
Teaching/learning method(s)
This course is designed as a workshop course. Therefore, students’ activeparticipation is pivotal for the successful commencement of this course. Students will play a significant role in this active-learning process. All students are inspired to contribute their own knowledge and experience related to modern organization, HRM and OB during the course. The quality of the discussion in each class will be a direct result of the extent to which you manage to read the assigned material before each class session. I will be looking forward to you to be there, be on time, and be prepared. The course combines lecture on key theories, research and current practice with experiential learning. Ingeneral, each class will last for 3 hours and is consisted of the following components:

Anintroductory lecture by the course instructor on key concepts of the topic of the class
    Groupclass discussion
    Student presentations
    Case discussion

Self-managed teams are used in this course because they play central roles in organizations. Working in teams provides students an opportunity to learn from their colleagues and practice working, managing, solving problems, and making strategic decisions in a setting that approximates the management teams typically charged with such tasks. In addition to working with their team on the team project, Istrongly encourage students to meet regularly with their team members to discuss class assignments and cases before the class meets. This will help you to develop a more cohesive team.
Assessment
Students will be assessed internally. The following assessment criteria will apply for the course:

  • Class preparation and participation (20 %)
  • Class Surprise Quizzes (20%)
  • Case Analysis (20%)
  • Long Essay (40%)

The essay should be approximately 4500 words. For this essay, student has to pick 3 to 4 research articles from refereed journals about the context specific human resource management practices or organization behavior. The assignment is to research a country or a region, figure out how human resources are managed in MNCs (working in a different cultural environment) or local organization (utilizing contemporary HRM practices) and how workforce quickly adapts to the culture ordiffused practices with an emphasis on describing and explaining the elements of international organizational behavior. The essay should provide a description and analysis of the culture of the country or region, the underlying assumptions and beliefs of that culture, and the origins (such as religious andhistorical) of those beliefs. The essay should then show how these are manifested in  the human resource management practices, organizational behavioral and business practices, and how they relate to management tasks such as planning, organizing, directing, and staffing. Finally, it should describe how the culture differs from Austrian culture, and what difference this makes for the conduct of business in or with that country.
