Contents
Based on the strategic and financial analysis of a listed company (Lenzing AG), students will develop a detailed earnings forecast based on an integrated financial model. During the first part of the course, students will learn about various forecasting techniques that will be applied during the second part. The results will be presented to a company representative.
Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course, students

  • can apply different forecasting techniques in simple settings
  • will be able to apply forecasting techniques to earnings forecasts for listed companies
  • can write a comprehensive earnings forecast report based on a strategic and financial analysis

Students will also improve their presentation, writing and Excel skills, team coordination and leadership skills.
Teaching/learning method(s)
The course uses a problem based learning approach. This implies that students will need to develop solutions to complex questions on an  individual and/or group level. To support this process, a mix of instruments will be used: Input lectures will provide basic concepts for the next steps, coaching sessions will provide early feedback and presentations and reports will demonstrate the ability of students to successfully structure problems and provide meaningful answers. Practitioner input will give students guidance and feedback on their progress.
Assessment
Students will be graded based on individual and group work. This will comprise homework solutions to forecasting problems, presentations, a final forecast report, participation in group discussions and individual contributions to the forecasting projects.
Prerequisites for participation and waiting lists
SBWL-Grundkurs (Kurs 1) und Business Analysis Project Kurs
Readings
1 Author: see Business Analysis course
Content relevant for class examination: Yes
Content relevant for diploma examination: No
Recommendation: Essential reading for all students
Type: Book
Recommended previous knowledge and skills

Apart from financial analysis knowhow (Grundkurs SBWL, Business Analysis Project) your performance and level of effort will depend on your Word, Excel and Powerpoint skills. For those who have not used these tools intensively we recommend to get (re)acquainted with these programs before the start of the course. We'll provide basic templates for Word and Powerpoint, but not for Excel. VBA programming is not required, but may be helpful.

Specifically, we recommend a look at the following issues:

Microsoft Word: consistent formatting of documents

Microsoft Excel: separation of data and models, absolute and relative cell references, standardizing workbook formats, customized cell formats, conditional formatting, linking worksheets, resolving circular references

Microsoft Powerpoint: basic forms of presenting information, shapes provided with powerpoint, elements of PPT templates.
