As moreand more organizations continue to expand globally, the need to successfullymanage a dispersed workforce across cultural and institutional boundaries hasbecome vital. Thus, international human resource management (IHRM) plays animportant strategic role by ensuring the smooth integration acrossinternational subsidiaries and by preparing employees to handle the challengesassociated with working in the global context. Thiscourse is designed to provide you with a better understanding of the variousIHRM practices. We will cover topics such global staffing, expatriation, globalperformance management and compensation, and global human resource development.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will:

  1. Demonstrate an increased understandingof the major aspects of international human resource management.

  2. Be able to analyze how cultural,institutional, and organizational factors shape IHRM practices.

  3. Acquire skills and tools to developsuccessful IHRM programs and practices in regard to global staffing,recruitment, compensation, performance management, expatriation, repatriation,training and development, and M&A integration.

  4. Develop improved research, criticalthinking, teamwork, and presentation skills.

Teaching/learning method(s)

This course iscomprised of lectures, case analyses, exercises, a group written report and presentation,and a final in-class examination. This is a highly interactive course. Thus, studentsare expected to be fully engaged and participate in class discussions. The course is designed in such a way as to maximize yourlearning by balancing between lecture and your involvement in discussions, cases,and exercises. All course documents, assignments, lecture notes, etc.will be posted on the course website on Learn@WU.

Assessment

Assessment will be based on bothindividual and team performance. Please note that successful in-classparticipation involves not only regularly attendingclass but also frequently contributing to the discussion by answeringquestions, participating in class exercises, engaging in a thoughtful analysisof the discussed cases, building on other students’ ideas, and synthesizing acrossreadings and discussions. You are expected tohave read in advance all the required reading materials and cases and be preparedto discuss them in class. Regular attendance is a requirement to pass this course, you are allowed to miss only one class session.

Written final exam (in-class, multiple choice and essay questions): 15% of total grade

One individual written case analysis *: 20% of total grade

Team written report * (final grade partially depends on peer evaluations): 15% of total grade

Team in-class presentation * (final grade partially depends on peer evaluations): 20% of total grade

In-class participation: 30% of total grade
