Contents

This course will deal with the following aspects in connection with business communication in English:

  • Communicative competence
  • Spoken and written fluency
  • Coherence and cohesion
  • Grammatical accuracy
  • Phonological control

Learning outcomes

After completing this course, students should be better able, among other things, to

- engage in strategic communication

- give clear, well-structured oral presentations

- be able to recognise and apply persuasive rhetorical devices

- give constructive feedback

- write effective emails

Teaching/learning method(s)
Students will be provided with various inputs outlining the basic skills required with regard to written and oral communication. Based on that information, students will have to apply their theoretical know-how to practical use; this will include analysing and engaging in communication with a focus on persuasive rhetorical skills. Specific tasks in the course will include giving presentations and writing emails, as well as participating in spontaneous speaking activities. 
Assessment

Students will be assessed on:

  • brief written tasks (email & presentation abstract; 10%)
  • active participation in class discussions and feedback (10%)
  • engagement and performance in speaking activities (30%)
  • a short presentation held in class (50%; includes quality of preparation and language proficiency)

Open only to CEMS/MIM students enrolled in the 2012 curriculum
Recommended previous knowledge and skills
advanced English skills (C1/C1 - written/oral)
