* General discussion of central accounting topics and terminology:

 including financial statements, reporting standards and the accounting profession

* Differences in accounting terminology IFRS - US GAAP - Austria

* Close reading of accounting articles and the language used in them, both general and specific

* Linguistic and historical aspects of accounting language

* A light-hearted take on accounting

Learning outcomes

THIS COURSE IS COMMONLY KNOWN AS 'ENGLISH BUSINESS COMMUNICATION 4' (EBC4).

After attending this course, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate a level of general English competence equivalent to C1 (lower) on the Common European Framework ( Common European Framework ) with respect to aural and oral skills;
  • understand the structure and language of intermediate-level texts in specific business-law related fields;
  • understand and use standard phrases and apply correctly general and specialized terminology associated with the field of accounting;
  • combine these abilities in order to enter effectively into oral discussion about general and specialized concepts in accounting.

In addition, this course fosters the following soft skills:
  • Explanation and summary in German (or other native language) of texts, written and oral, relating to the field of business English.
  • Improved reading & writing skills

Teaching/learning method(s)

Lecture style; additionally, article reading and analysis by students.

Some interactive  elements  will be incorporated and student's participation is encouraged.

Students will be required to do some reading at home.

Assessment

A.) WU students: Written exam

NOTE: Registration for the course is required to register for the exam, which can be taken at the end of the semester at the earliest. B.) For exchange students who want / need to take an exam the requirements are: class attendance and an exam (oral or written) at the end of the semester
