This research seminar is designed to provide current and prospective doctoral/PhD students with the opportunity to engage with domestic and international scholars conducting research across various fields within the management discipline. The seminar will include presentations and discussions on ongoing research papers as well as different methodological approaches to conducting research.

 

Learning outcomes

The research seminar is intended to provide a forum for students to interact with and discuss research with their peers and senior scholars. Students will gain first-hand insights into scientific research and to deepen their knowledge of different approaches to theoretical and empirical research. At the end of the seminar, students will be expected to know:

  • How to develop a clear and concise line of research that has the potential to make significant theoretical and practical contributions to the management discipline
  • How to effectively identify and articulate a research topic and question(s)
  • How to select an appropriate research design and methodology
  • How to carry out a research project and to effectively communicate the project to an academic audience

Assessment

Evaluation Content and Breakdown:

  • Attendance and Participation [10%]
  • Summary of one 'Methodological Approach' discussed by a visiting speaker - 2 pages, single-spaced [10%]
  • Individual Research - present and defend one work-in-progress (e.g., conference paper, dissertation proposal, book chapter, dissertation monograph chapter, etc.) [30%]; revise and submit work-in-progress paper/chapter [40%]
  • Discussant on Peer Research - prepare a one-page summary of comments on one peer research project [10%]
