Contents
  • Basics of communication, negotiating skills: active listening, personal messages, questioning techniques.
  • Body language and appearance during presentations and speeches.
  • Giving and taking feedback.
  • Differences between Management and Leadership as input and as tool for practicing team facilitation (brainstorming and solution finding)
  • Intercultural topics in a globalized world: overview of different cultures (the Lewis Model) as helpful tool for a future in an international and multicultural (business) world.
Learning outcomes

After completing this course,

  • Students are able to prepare presentations and speeches and perform at their best in business situations and/or public appearances
  • Students become aware of the necessity to fit speeches and presentations to different target groups (culture, personality, behavior).
  • Students will experience the typical pitfalls of communication and know how to avoid misunderstandings and conflicts.
  • Students will understand the differences between managing and leading (process vs. people oriented).
  • They will experience finding solutions in team settings and how to facilitate this process

Assessment
  • 40% Written Exam
  • 10% Preparation of a presentation lasting at least 5 minutes (PowerPoint or similar) ready for the course (topic: study related)
  • 30% Active participation in class and in role plays  - Attendance is the precondition to be graded for this part of the grade
  • 20% Reflexion paper on personal development and on what to work on in the future (3-5 pages)
