Businesses today are faced with rapidly changing environments and an unknown level of uncertainty. Thus, companies rely less and less on traditional sources of knowledge within their organizational boundaries and explore other sources of innovation outside the firm. This exploration process might include experimentation and prototyping to effectively organize innovation processes.

This course intends to consolidate managerial considerations and scientific rigor in carrying out an innovation challenge. Students will learn about a specific form of open innovation, namely crowdsourcing, and gain hand on exüperience in a real project related to this type of innovation. Theoretical input on how to set up and execute projects will be provided and be complimented by interactive case discussions. Students will also have the chance to meet innovation practitioners and will be able to participate in challenges organized by well-known companies such as Bayer, Deutsche Telekom, or Microsoft.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course, students should be able to

  • analyze and assess crowdsourcing initiatives from a theoretical and practical perspective,
  • understand the underlying drivers and mechanisms of such initiatives,
  • design and execute crowdsourcing projects

Moreover, this course will improve the students’ ability to

  • efficiently work and communicate in an international team,
