This doctoral seminar focuses on discovering research opportunities and the challenges of transforming the ideas for research into research proposals.
This course is addressed to all doctoral and PhD students, who would like to:
- develop their own ideas for research
- present their research ideas to fellow doctoral and PhD students
- enhance their knowledge about developing a research proposal
After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:
- position a study in a stream of literature
- embed the research proposal in a currently relevant theoretical discussion
- develop and write a research proposal with more precision
The first four classes each have 12 articles. The six students will each prepare two articles each session to lead the discussion on for 15-20 minutes. This should include slides and notes on the articles that they share with their colleagues following the presentation. Each class will also have two fifteen minute breaks. At the end of the class with the time left I will meet with each student to discuss their ideas for research. They are expected to have a 10 page research proposal they turn in one week after the class.
The last session will have only six articles which we will discuss for approximately 2 hours. After these article discussion the students will each present for 20 minutes on their research idea to the group. The group’s feedback should be incorporated into the final research proposal.
- 9 article summaries from each student that are shared with class: 5% each or 45% of total grade
- 10 page including bibliography research idea: 55% of grade
The students are to pull the articles below. Read all articles. Prior to the start of class we will communicate and articles you are responsible for will be identified.
Do note some articles I treat as a single entity several times where there are comments in response to the article that are included.
