The course is intended to introduce central socioeconomic theories and methods from a multidisciplinary perspective.

The topic health is integrally treated from the perspective of different socioeconomic disciplines (such as sociology, economics and demography).

The following content areas will be dealt with:

Sociological and economic theories: basic concepts, and empirical approaches
Disciplinary and interdisciplinary methods of health research;
Specific topics and fields of application of health research (e.g., discrimination and health inequalities, risky health behavior);
Development of research questions and effective designs in selected areas.

Learning outcomes

After completing this course, students should be able to:

understand, classify and evaluate central socioeconomic theories and methods
recognize the multi-dimensionality of problem situations in health research
adapt socioeconomic theories and methods to specific fields of application and to apply them to specific socioeconomic questions
examine and develop integrative research designs

This course also supports the following skills:

Theoretical and methodological reflexion competences, the ability to adapt and apply different theoretical concepts and methodological approaches to the analysis of socioeconomic problem areas
Based on theoretical concepts, to develop multiperspective analysis competencies for specific questions
In teamwork socioeconomic thematic complexes in a case study oriented theoretical and empirical research and to prepare the results for the presentation

Attendance requirements

It is mandatory to attend the first lecture unless otherwise explicitly informed by e-mail. 75% attendance is required.
