Contents

Students specify the focus, structure, and working plan for their master thesis and later improve its framing according to feedback from faculty and peers. In addition to presenting her/his own project, every student will provide structured feedback on another presentation.

Learning outcomes

The course enables students to

  • Present and explain a research proposal or (work-in-progress) research project

  • Take and build on comments from a critical audience

  • Review and evaluate someone else’s research project

Attendance requirements

Generally, students must attend all sessions and arrive on time for all sessions. However, students may miss a maximum of one sessions, bearing in mind that participation points cannot be gathered in case of absence.

Teaching/learning method(s)

Participants and faculty meet in four sessions all of which are mandatory. Every student will present her/his work once. Depending on the phase of their project, students present their thesis proposal or thesis draft (work in progress), defend their approach and results, and discuss learnings and implications with peers. In addition to presenting one’s own project, every student will provide constructive feedback (incl. a short visual presentation) on another presentation. Beyond that, peers and faculty provide feedback in a plenary discussion. Every student writes up a brief essay that summarizes the lessons learned.

 

Assessment

  • Presentation and discussion of own project 50%

  • Feedback presentation on other student’s project 25%

  • Write-up of lessons learned 15%

  • Class participation 10%

Prerequisites for participation and waiting lists

Participants must have a topic assigned or supervision agreement for their master thesis. As exceptional cases and being subject to the availability of places, also students that have not yet started or already finalized their project are accepted.

On registration, students inform the course instructor by email about the topic and progress of their project. A detailed schedule including all presentations will be available shortly after the registration deadline.
