The course provides an introduction to the theoretical aspects and practical adaptation of Operations Research methods for modelling and solving linear optimization problems and analysing data, especially in production, transportation, logistics and marketing.
Topics include:
- Data analysis
- Simulation
- Modelling of optimization problems
- Introduction to solving optimization problems using standard software
- Sensitivity analysis
After attending this course, students will be able to:
- Apply techniques learned in OR 1 to solve problems
- Generate solutions using standard software
- Interpret the optimal solution and perform elementary sensitivity analysis
- Create elementary simulations of typical production, logistics and service systems.
Attendance requirement is met if a student is present for at least 80% of the lectures.
The course is taught using a combination of lectures, classdiscussions, homework and in-class assignments.
The assessment of OR 2 is based on three marks: a group mark for home assignments and individual marks for the exam and in-class assignments. The overall structure is as follows:
- Group mark (30%): The group mark is composed of 4 group assignments worth 7.5% each.
- Individual mark (50%): The exam at the end will be undertaken on an individual basis.
- In-class assignments (20%):Throughout the sessions we will do 4 in-class assignments about pre-reading material and/or content of the actual and previous session worth 5% each.
Grading scale:
- Excellent (1): 90% - 100%
- Good (2): 80% - <90%
- Satisfactory (3): 70% - <80%
- Sufficient (4): 60.0% - <70%
- Fail (5): <60.0%
Prerequisite for passing the course: minimum performance of 40% in the final examination.
Prerequisite: MSc SCM course "Operations Research (OR)".
Participation is restricted to MSc SCM students (WU Wien).
