The Earth is warming and our climate is changing as a direct result of human activity. The landmark 2018 IPCC report gave us 12 years to bring about a dramatic change in our collective behavior, in order to decrease risk of global catastrophic scenarios. People around the world are waking up to the cruel reality: the rich and powerful who have benefited from the unrestricted consumption of fossil fuels are willing to burn the planet down to the ground rather than changing their behavior to give the next generation a chance for a livable future. World-wide protest movements have not yet produced the amount of pressure on the governments to force the emergency response that is required.

Historically, marketing has delivered incredible profits to global business, through research and advertising. In doing so, it has also contributed to the over-consumption culture and the associated emissions, more than we would like to admit. In this workshop, we will apply our marketing skills and vision in order to organize the kind of collective efforts required to tackle this global crisis. Our target is to put a price on carbon emissions. This simple, market measure ("you emit CO2, you pay EUR") is based on science and has already been successfully deployed in some places. Emissions are local, but climate crisis is global, so we need first a European-wide carbon price, and later a global one. We aim for a rapid development and execution of an international campaign to help existing efforts pushing for a carbon price.

Learning outcomes

After reviewing some of the relevant information, the students will be working in small groups, to study and develop plans to promote the carbon price idea, using the tools and methods specific to our marketing context.

    Attendance requirements

You need to attend 80% of the lectures in order to pass the course.

    Teaching/learning method(s)

Short lectures, group work, group catch-ups with instructors.

    Assessment

The grading will consist of the following components:

    Slack Tasks (15%)

Throughout the course we will assign you very simple tasks using the course channel on Slack. These tasks will consist of introducing yourself, give your input on an idea, or simply letting us know what you'd like to see improved. Keep an eye on the group channel to stay up to date on what's required of you.

    Submission of peer evaluation (5%)

The course will include peer evaluation, explained below. Students will be given 5 points by simply submitting their peer evaluations in the correct format (details will be uploaded on Learn).

    Peer evaluation (30%)

Students will be asked to assess their colleagues’ performance. Each student will be randomly assigned to 10 of his/her peers and assess them on the following criteria:

    - quality of their work

    - engagement

    - dependability

Since some students will not have worked with each other, the person doing the evaluations may indicate that they did not work with some of the individuals they were assigned to.

The instructors reserve the right to ask students about their evaluations and adapt the outcome of this component accordingly.

Instructors grading of individual performance: 35%

While the group's efforts will be judged as a whole in the group report component, you will also be graded based on your individual contributions to the project. Each student will be assigned a task to complete.

Submission of final individual reflection (5% + 10%)

In this short reflection (500 words max), you are supposed to detail your contribution to the project and, based on that, justify the grade you believe you deserve. You will get 5 points (out of 100) simply by submitting this file in the correct format, regardless of the quality, and another 10 points for the content.

    Final individual reflection (10%)

In this short report (500 words max), you are supposed to detail your contribution to the group and, based on that, justify the grade you believe you deserve. You will get 10 points (out of 100) simply by submitting this file, regardless of the quality. However, we will take your report into account when grading the remaining components.
