Procedure for the course when limited activity on campus

The Covid19 pandemic causes several uncertainties for the upcoming winter semester starting on October 5th. If possible within the then valid health regulations, we plan to fully return to the usual mode of classroom teaching with mandatory attendance. Nonetheless, an additional “plan B”-scenario for distance and/or hybrid teaching will be prepared for every class, which can be enabled if need be.

The program management will reevaluate the situation in September and will then decide whether the classes will indeed start in the usual mode or in an alternative mode. This decision will be announced in the syllabus until September 25.

For the class in International Supply Chain Operations the preferred alternative scenario would be a hybrid mode: a mixture of class room teaching and remote online sessions (via ZOOM) in parallel. Only if absolutely necessary this class would switch to full distance mode. Even in the remote format, the sessions will take place within the announced time slots. All sessions will be recorded and made available on Learn@WU (via lecture casts).

A change of the class mode might also influence the required assignments (e.g. number of assignments, scope, evaluation, ...) and/or the format of the final exam. Necessary alterations will be communicated together with the announcement of the mode’s shift as it depends to size of class and number on students participating online / in class in the hybrid mode scenario.

Contents

The course is held in four sessions structured as follows:

  1. Trade Environment and Export/Import Operations
  2. Customs Practices and Trade Facilitation
  3. Trade Management: contracting issues, trade terms (esp. Incoterms 2020) and terms of payment.
  4. Risk-, Security- and Compliance Management
  5. Transport Management: documentary paperwork, insurance and liability issues.
  6. Wrap-up, In-class Case Study about Transport Management Issues

This sequence of sessions may change due to availablility of lecturers.

Learning outcomes
At the end of this second course, students should have a basic knowledge about actual trade practice, including contracting, customs, documentary paperwork, transport management as well as security, compliance and risk management issues. This should enable them to plan successfully shipping and handling for international goods movements.
Attendance requirements

Attendance of minimum 80% (or 5/6 sessions) is mandatory.

Teaching/learning method(s)

This semester, teaching will be in hybrid mode: a mixture of class room teaching and remote online sessions (via MS Teams or ZOOM) in parallel. Only if absolutely necessary this class would switch to full distance mode. Even in the remote format, the sessions will take place within the announced time slots. All sessions will be recorded and made available on Learn@WU (via lecture casts).
