Ablauf der LV bei eingeschränktem Campusbetrieb

"Managing Globalization" is an online course. The meetings happen at the Microsoft TEAM platform. All students have to set up a TEAM account. Participation information will be provided to the students before the course starts.

Inhalte der LV

This introductory course is designed to introduce students to the central themes, challenges and opportunities that managers encounter who work in a global business environment.  Special attention will be given to emerging economies. The emphasis will be on developing an understanding of what globalization is, its drivers and effects and how it is interrelated with the conduct of business activities today.

The objectives of the course are:
•    To introduce students to the domain of globalization
•    To understand the forces, underlying mechanisms and actors driving globalization
•    To become aware of the business challenges and opportunities in the global context and ways to address them
•    To learn what types of multinational firms exist and how they drive globalization.

Lernergebnisse (Learning Outcomes)

The objectives and learning outcomes of this course are in three areas:

a)    Knowledge and Understanding
After completing this course the student will have (gained or improved):
•    General knowledge of the global context and the international linkages.
•    Knowledge of differences in business environments in the global arena.
•    Basic knowledge of the management challenges in the global arena.

b)    Cognitive & Subject Specific Skills
Students on completion of the course will have (gained or improved):
•    The know-how to obtain and analyze information which will aid decision making.
•    The ability to analyze cases in a global context and to develop good solutions for the stated problems. 
•    The ability to assess the pressures to globalize in industries.

c)    Key Skills
Students on completion of the course will have (gained or improved):
•    Their ability to rapidly structure ideas and presentations both as individuals and as members of a team.
•    Their ability to shift material quickly and efficiently, and to structure it into a coherent argument.
•    Their ability to research material related to companies and business context under pressure of tight deadlines.
•    Their abilities in relation to teamwork including analytical and presentation skills.

    Regelung zur Anwesenheit

    To pass the course you are not allowed to miss more than 20% of the online lecture.


    The course will be run virtually. It is a combination of an online lecture, case discussions, a research project and talks by business practitioners and experts ("practice insights"), The course encompasses several lecture sessions, which will provide the foundations of globalization and conducting business in the globalized world, group presentations on selected topics and talks by practitioners.

    A list of required readings and cases will be sent to the students three weeks before the course starts.

    Student groups will work on the analysis of cases and on the presentation of their research on a core topic.

    Leistung(en) für eine Beurteilung

    The course grade will be determined as follows

    • Case report (20%)
    • Peer review commentary (10%)
    • Research project (60%)
    • Peer-group rating (10%)

    60% of total points have to be achieved to pass the course.
