Procedure for the course when limited activity on campus

Hybrid format; depending on the Corona requirements in place, coachings and/or presentations will take place at WU. Online units will take place at the scheduled times.

As of Sept 10, we plan to have meetings at WU for Oct 6 (2 groups of students, from 13:00-14:45 and 15:00-16:45) and on Oct 12 (full-day event with student presentations and discussions). The final presentation on Nov 3 will be online. All other sessions are reserved for group coachings that will be held at WU (preferably) or online depending on the COVID-rules in place. We will provide an update with a detailed course schedule on Sept 28.

Contents

This class is project-based. Students will take the role of a financial analyst and conduct a comprehensive analysis of the firm's corporate and business strategies, its past financial performance and its value drivers.

Learning outcomes

After completing this class students will be able to:

  • analyze a firm's strategy (corporate and business strategy)
  • interpret financial reports
  • use databases like Bloomberg or Refinitive to access key financial data
  • calculate and interpret financial ratios and KPIs
  • combine financial and non-financial data to analyze value drivers
  • design and implement a financial analysis project

Apart from that, completing this course will contribute to students' abilities to:

  • be an effective, hard- and soft-skilled team member
  • work effectively in a team-based structure
  • give presentations on complex topics

    Attendance requirements

    Attendance: In order to successfully pass this course, your absence is limited to 20% of our appointments.

    The course uses a problem-based learning approach. This implies that students will need to develop solutions to complex questions on an individual and/or group level. To support this process, a mix of instruments will be used: Input lectures and other learning materials will provide basic concepts for the next steps, coaching sessions will provide early feedback and presentations and reports will demonstrate the ability of students to successfully structure problems and provide meaningful answers.

      Assessment

      The course grading system is based on:

      • kick-off presentations 30% 
      • Excel model and financial analysis presentation, incl. components of grading from peer-review 60%
      • Participation 10%

      • good/Gut ≥75,0%
      • satisfactory/Befriedigend ≥62,5%
      • sufficient/Genügend ≥50,0%

      Experience in Excel modeling, with IFRS or corporate finance topics will be helpful, but is not required.

      The first meeting and the kick-off event of our project with the first round of presentations on October 12, 2020 will take place at WU. Later sessions will be at least partly online. More information will follow in due course.
