Procedure for the course when limited activity on campus

The class in Sustainable and Humanitarian Supply Chains has a full distance learning concept with a student competition for an international conference.

The defined assignments will still be held in the regular format (also see syllabus section "Assessment"). In any case the conditions of the final exam will be the same for every class participant and, hence, in hybrid mode an online exam.

Even in the remote format, the sessions will take place within the announced time slots, but contents may vary. The assigned time slots are reserved for the coordination of the student competition, open questions and the 4 quizzes on defined contents.

The sessions will be recorded and made available within MS Teams and within Learn@WU (via lecture casts).

Learning outcomes

This course deals with the topic of humanitarian supply chains. It starts with an introduction into the basics and fundamental concepts of humanitarian logistics. The main challenges of disaster relief operations are discussed and the main differences to logistics in a business environment are described. While the second session is focused on the preparedness phase of a disaster, the third session will be devoted to the disaster response phase. In the fourth session, different recent research areas are discussed (Multi-objective optimization, Needs Assessment).

These defined contents above provide just the basis for the course and are provided via videos in the lecture cast area of Learn@WU. Additional material, relevant to the competition and the quizzes, will be discussed in the first session.

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to reflect upon basic and advanced concepts in the area of humanitarian logistics and their application in practice. They have an understanding of different modelling approaches that can support decision making in the humanitarian context. Furthermore, students can critically assess and discuss results of such models. Finally, they prepare presentations on special topics in the area of humanitarian supply chain management and thus improve the ability to present and discuss their work.

Attendance requirements

Attendance requirement is met if a student is present for at least 80% of the lectures. There will be no physical meetings but regular Q&A sessions on MS Teams

Teaching/learning method(s)

This course has the character of a seminar. The students have to prepare case studies for an international student competition and the contents of these are discussed in class. As a second core method, lecturecasts of theoretical  contents will be provided, supplemented by readings, and asked in the 4 quizzes.
