Learning outcomes

The main goal of this course is to offer students insights into the demanding world of consultants. In the course of our meetings, students get the unique chance to get to know representatives of leading top management consultancies in a protected environment.

After finishing this course students will be able to:

  • distinguish between different approaches towards management consulting
  • understand the idiosyncrasies of each of them
  • understand the basics and key success factors of management consulting
  • work on case studies which is typically required during the application process with management consulting firms
  • work on case studies in a structured way
  • present their findings in competitive settings
  • solve business cases with a sound business sense and commonsense
Attendance requirements

In order to successfully pass this course, you may miss one session at most. If you already know that you will miss a certain session, kindly inform me during our first session.

In addition, note that the locations in the syllabus are preliminary. We will try to have as many meetings in the consultants' offices or at WU as possible. However, depending on the COVID situation, we will also need to be flexible and switch to an online format if required.

** As required by the new WU guidelines that I received today (21st January), all meetings in March will take place online.

Teaching/learning method(s)

Highly renowned consultants will present their own special approaches towards consulting. Moreover, participants will get the chance to work on real case studies and subsequently present the results in front of consultants. However, we will not only focus on case studies as the course also includes debate clubs and the simulation of job interviews for management consulting. Therefore, participants will gain knowledge in wide array of different areas: consulting know-how, analytical skills, presentation skills, and other soft skills. Our sessions will be complemented by informal get2gethers if possible given the current circumstances. The course will entirely be held in English.

Assessment

The final grade is composed of the follwing criteria:

    • case study presentations (40%)
    • active participation (20%)
    • reflection paper (40%)
