This class is project-based. Students will take the role of a financial analyst and conduct a comprehensive analysis of the firm's corporate and business strategies, its past financial performance and its value drivers.

Learning outcomes

After completing this class students will be able to:

  • analyze a firm's strategy (corporate and business strategy)
  • interpret financial reports
  • use databases like Bloomberg or Refinitive to access key financial data
  • calculate and interpret financial ratios and KPIs
  • combine financial and non-financial data to analyze value drivers
  • design and implement a financial analysis project

Apart from that, completing this course will contribute to students' abilities to:

  • be an effective, hard- and soft-skilled team member
  • work effectively in a team-based structure
  • give presentations on complex topics

    Attendance requirements

    Attendance: In order to successfully pass this course, your absence is limited to 20% of all our appointments including online sessions.

    The course uses a problem-based learning approach. This implies that students will need to develop solutions to complex questions on an individual and/or group level. To support this process, a mix of instruments will be used: Input lectures and other learning materials will provide basic concepts for the next steps, coaching sessions will provide early feedback and presentations and reports will demonstrate the ability of students to successfully structure problems and provide meaningful answers.

      The course grading system is based on:

      • kick-off presentations 30% 
      • Excel model and financial analysis presentation, incl. components of grading from peer-review 60%
      • Participation 10%

      • excellent/Sehr gut ≥87,5%
      • good/Gut ≥75,0%
      • satisfactory/Befriedigend ≥62,5%
      • sufficient/Genügend ≥50,0%
      • not sufficient/Nicht genügend <50,0%

      Recommended previous knowledge and skills

      Experience in Excel modeling, with IFRS or corporate finance topics will be helpful, but is not required.

      We are looking forward to a regular term without an absolute minimum of online sessions. Please reserve March 14/15 for an external 1.5 day session including an overnight stay. More information will follow in due course.
