Contents

Introduction to central approaches to growth theory (neoclassical growth - Solow; endogenous growth - Romer; semi-endogenous growth - Jones), Introduction to a model-based empirical assessment of the determinants of economic growth. Application of the models to explain cross-country income differences.

Learning outcomes

After taking the course students will be able to understand the basics of theoretical approaches to economic growth (neoclassical growth theory and endogenous growth theory) and apply them in an empirical context.

Attendance requirements

Since personal interaction is important in this course, attendance and active participation are necessary. Thus, Attendance is compulsory for at least (80%) of the sessions. This holds true in the case of an on-campus mode as well as in the case of online teaching. In particular, attendance is necessary in the first meeting, the presentations in the exercise and seminar parts, and at the final exam. More than 20% of sessions missed lead to being unregistered from the course.

If you will miss a course because of illness or quarantine, send me an email before the corresponding unit starts and include a confirmation (medical statement, quarantine statement, etc.). This will then not count as a missed unit.

Teaching/learning method(s)

The course is composed of three parts.

The first part is a set of lectures on growth theory. This is followed by exercises that students prepare and present in class (group homework). In this part, students apply the theory in a given context. In the third part (approximately 3 units), students prepare and present a term paper (group work). There will be a final exam on parts 1 and 2 accounting for 40% of the grade, the presentation of the exercises will account for 30% of the grade, and the presentation of the term paper will also account for 30% of the grade.

Assessment

Final exam (40%), presentation of the exercises (30%), and presentation of the term paper (30%). For passing the course, achieving 50% is necessary.

Prerequisites for participation and waiting lists

After the registration period, students from the waiting list, who don't yet have a valid registration, will be assigned to available places in the specific courses on a first-come-first-served principle. Students with a valid registration who cannot participate need to unregister so that the place is available for somebody else.
