This course provides an introduction to a range of research methods that are commonly used in both communication studies and linguistics, and equips students with essential knowledge and skills that will allow them to apply these methods in subsequent courses. It comprises three main sections: 1) Introduction to research and theory; 2) Data collection; and 3) Data analysis.

We begin by offering a general introduction to how empirical research is carried out in practice, helping students to both define and formulate the academic field(s) of analysis covered. This includes outlining the differences between theory and methodology, approaches to constructing research questions and hypotheses, and the importance of research ethics. We then discuss data collection methods, such as interviews, questionnaires, experiments, and corpus compilation. Finally, students are introduced to quantitative and qualitative research methods and data analysis techniques that are appropriate for research projects in the field(s), such as corpus linguistics and content analysis.

The course involves a strong practical element, including hands-on sessions, inviting students to try out analysis techniques for themselves. Furthermore, the course has a strong emphasis on interdisciplinarity, drawing on examples from academic literature across both communication studies and linguistics.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to

1) define and discuss the basic tenets / key concepts of empirical research.

2) identify and apply different data collection methods that are suitable for research projects in communication studies and linguistics.

3) analyse different types of data using appropriate research methods and communicate their findings clearly and effectively.

4) critically assess and discuss  the advantages and disadvantages associated with different data collection techniques and research methods.

Attendance requirements

As with all PI courses, attendance is a requirement to pass this course. As a special concession, you may miss up to 2 meetings of your LV. However, if you miss a third, you will automatically fail the course. This condition applies whatever the reasons for your absences may have been.

For more information, see: https://www.wu.ac.at/studierende/mein-studium/masterguide/lv-und-pruefungsinfos/vorlesungsuebung-vue

Teaching/learning method(s)

Research Methods and Data Analysis is taught over twelve sessions in which a range of different types of data collection (e.g., interviews, questionnaires, experiments, and corpus compilation) and data analysis (e.g. corpus linguistics, content analysis, and statistical data analysis) are discussed. This course combines input-oriented lectures with practical hands-on analyses. During input sessions, students will actively participate in discussions and reflect on possible applications of the methods and data analysis techniques. During the practical sessions, students will try out various tools and techniques for themselves.

Assessment

Research Methods and Data Analysis  is a PI class, which means that you need to satisfy the attendance requirement mentioned above (see 'Regelung zur Anwesenheit'). Assessment and your final score are made up of three elements:

  • Data analysis (40%)
  • Data collection (40%)
  • Participation (20%)

Grade scale:

Less than 60 percent: 5
60 and above: 4
70 and above: 3
80 and above: 2
90 and above: 1

Prerequisites for participation and waiting lists

There are no formal requirements with regard to attendance of the class Research Methods and Data Analysis.
