Julia Steinberger, Professor of Ecological Economics at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, is the fifth Vienna Karl Polanyi Visiting Professor. The PhD seminar, held by Julia Steinberger and supported by Andreas Novy, addresses the ongoing climate crisis from an Ecological Economics perspective. It focuses on limits to growth, climate-friendly living and socio-ecological transformation: How does capitalist growth imperative impact on contemporary provision systems? How to transform contemporary provision systems and how to shape desired, effective and feasible socialecological transformations?
The broad aim of the seminar is to sharpen a critical perspective on climate politics, climate polices as well as climate activism. Due to multiple crises, the seminar contextualizes current debates in broader debates of political ecology, a post-growth society as well as geopolitical and geoeconomic challenges.
After finishing the course, the students will
- have additional knowledge on social-ecological transformation, post-growth economies and climate policies
- have deepened their understanding of key concepts of ecological economics
- have got access to state-of-the-art contemporary critical social research
In each session, a lecture by Julia Steinberger on the readings and their significance for the themes pursued in the seminar will be followed by a class discussion. Attendance is required and participation in seminar discussions is important.
