The course explores language and communication in a range of business and workplace settings, including, for example, commercial organisations, the public sector or health care. It builds on the key concepts and methodological skills introduced in Module 1 and further explores the ways in which language is used for politeness, power and persuasion in organisational contexts. The course focuses on key topics and sites of strategic communication, such as leadership, conflict management and diversity management, and introduces students to the theories underpinning these topics from a language perspective. Students will acquire methods and tools to analyse critically language and communicative practices, such as leadership discourse and narratives, by studying real data and practical examples from range of business settings.
On successful completion of the course, students will be able to
1) recognise how language is used in a range of business and workplace environments and be aware of the extent to which communicative practices construct organizations,
2) describe and critically discuss communicative practices and strategic language use in key topics in organizational communication with reference to relevant theories and academic literature,
3) successfully apply a range of methods to critically analyse language and communicative practices in organisations in specific business settings.
Attendance is a requirement to pass the course. In exceptional cases, you may miss one (1) session.
The sessions will consist of a combination of lecture-style input combined with class discussion, group work and group presentation.
