When looking at textbooks on leadership in university libraries one might get the impression, that every generation has their “own” leadership type reflecting its visions and beliefs: Charismatic Leadership, Empathic Leadership, Purpose Driven Leadership, Agile Leadership, Ecological Leadership,… When asked for examples of ethical Leaders, people name a wide range of persons ranging from Gandhi, Malala, Greta Thunberg, Elon Musk up to Mom and Dad. What does the concept of ethical leadership tell us about the visions and beliefs of our society?

In this course we are going to research what might be the constituting factors of ethical leadership. By reflecting on practical questions of our world we are going to delve into philosophical streams in ethic as well as leadership theory and build an understanding on ethical leadership.

Learning outcomes

Students will gather knowledge about the different layers of ethical leadership and its consequences reflected in people management systems.

Attendance requirements

Please note that the first and last session are mandatory. If you do not attend the first session, you will be de-registered from the course. In order to obtain a grade for the course, students must attend at least 85% of the course. An absence of 3 hours is permitted.

Assessment
  • Individual tasks (either digital or in class): 30%
  • Group project: 40%
  • Active participation and discussion: 30%

Grading scale:

5 - fail: 0-60%

4 - sufficient: 61-70%

3 - satisfactory: 71-80%

2 - good: 81-90%

1 - excellent: 91-100%
