Introduction to central approaches to growth theory (neoclassical -Solow; endogenous growth theory - Romer)

Learning outcomes

After taking the course students will be able to understand the empirics and basics of theoretical approaches to long-run economic growth and development (neoclassical growth theory and endogenous growth theory) and apply them in context.

Attendance requirements

Attendance is compulsory.

Teaching/learning method(s)

The course is composed of two parts.

The first part is a set of lectures on economic growth theory and empirics, with active discussion elements.

In the second part (approximately 3 units) students present modern scientific literature on economic growth topics (group work).

Assessment

Exam: 70%

Group presentation: 20%

Discussion of group presentation: 10%

No retake of the written exam is possible.

Prerequisites for participation and waiting lists

After the Registration period, students from the waiting list, who don't yet have a valid Registration, will be assigned to available places in the specific courses. This allotment is not based on a first-come first-served principle. Rather, Progress in the studies will be the decisive criterion.

Recommended previous knowledge and skills

Solid background in theoretical concepts of "Grundlagen VW", applied microeconomics and international macroeconomics.
