Contents

The course is designed to prepare students to write their master's thesis. Upon agreeing on a topic with a supervisor beforehand, the students will develop that topic into a concept for a master's thesis. During the seminar, students will get insights on the social scientific research process, project (self-)management, scientific work, the devlopment of adequate research questions, the structuring of a scientific thesis, and how to link theory with methodology. The students will then develop a proposal for their thesis, which they will present and defend against peer-feedback.

Learning outcomes

Upon completing the course, the students will be able to:

  • conceptualize a master's thesis themselves
  • manage their work flow
  • link theory with methodology
  • develop an adequate problem statement and research questions
  • defend their concept against peer-feedback
Attendance requirements

Attendance is mandatory. Students can miss a maximum of two session due to justifiable reasons. Absenteeism beyond two sessions can be compensated by an extra exam.

Teaching/learning method(s)

The course is designed as a colloquium that will consist of three parts. In the first part, students will get (re-)introduced to scientific work and project management related to writing a master's thesis. The second part is devoted to the development of a research proposal in coordination with the course instructor and the thesis supervisor. Finally, all students will present and defend their proposal in front of all attendees.

Assessment

Performance evaluation is based upon the following aspects:

  • active participation in the course
  • attendance
  • Proposal for a master's thesis (50%)
  • Presentation of the master's proposal (30%)
  • Providing structured peer-feedback on the proposal of a fellow student (20%)
