This course will familiarize participants with a wide range of language tools needed for successful business communication, including proper terminology and the appropriate choice of register.
Designed in as much of a hands-on fashion as possible, students will receive guidance from the instructor in analyzing and understanding authentic texts and producing materials with a special focus on marketing.
After completing this course, students will, among other things,
1) have the tools to better understand specialized English business texts, particularly in marketing;
2) be able to apply correct terminology within selected business fields;
3) and consequently enjoy increased confidence in communicating in those settings.
The course is divided into eight units, as indicated above and contains a number of exercises and activities designed to develop the requisite skills and knowledge. Classes are of a workshop nature and involve a wide range of activities focusing on both oral and written skills. These will include some or all of the following:
- reading and working with texts;
- response to student questions and other discussion about tricky content;
- presentations of various lengths;
- development of report-writing skills;
- further language development, involving both vocabulary and more advanced structures;
- writing and evaluating of short texts in response to instructions.
Some activities will take the form of pair or small-group work.
