Contents

The course investigates different aspects of logistics considering sustainable and environmental issues. Topics covered include railway and public transport, sustainable mobility, city logistics, circular economy and how to include sustainability related objectives. The topics  range from strategic considerations, such as network planning, to operational decisions, such as routing. We will also apply quantitative models and methods in order to build a more efficient and “greener” system.

Learning outcomes

After this course the students will be able

  • To analyse and apply quantitative methods to various problems arising in sustainable logistics
  • To elaborate and discuss practical examples in groups
  • To critically evaluate scientific papers
Attendance requirements

Attendance in the first lecture is mandatory for the participation in the course. If an absence cannot be avoided inform the lecturer  before class and provide some form of proof for the absence (e.g. medical confirmation) in the next session. In total, a minimum requirement for attendance of 80% is required to pass the course.

If the attendance falls below 80% for students receiving partial credit, students are graded with 5 (Nicht genügend).

Teaching/learning method(s)

Lecture with active participation including in class examples and case studies, assignments and presentations

Assessment

  • Group Assignments 30%
  • Presentations 10%
  • Quiz 20%
  • Final exam 40%

Lectures start punctually. In case of in-class assignments, be aware that they are most likely to take place at the beginning of a lecture. If students are absent during the in-class assignments no make-up assignments are granted.

Cooperation with other students on homework assignments is encouraged. However, the final write-up must be done individually. ‘Duplicate’ homework write-ups are unacceptable and will receive a score of zero. (Any homework that is late will receive a score of zero.). Quiz and final exam are closed book examinations.

The use of AI tools of any kind for course work assignments must be documented and declared in a statement in the introduction to documents submitted for assessment (e.g., texts, presentation slides, video/audio materials).

Grading scale:

  • (1) Excellent: 90% - 100%
  • (2) Good: 80% - <90%
  • (3) Satisfactory: 70% - <80%
  • (4) Sufficient: 60% - <70%
  • (5) Fail: <60%
