Contents

This course provides students with in-depth knowledge about planning, conducting and reporting an empirical mixed methods research project. In groups, students conduct a research project combining quantitative and qualitative methods. The focus is on the practical application of the methods introduced in the summer semester within the framework of a mixed-methods design. Further, in-depth methodological, theoretical and scientific-theoretical questions are discussed. Thematically, the content depends on the interests of the students.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Develop an appropriate mixed methods, quantitative and qualitative research question
  • Design a mixed methods research project
  • Select the methodology and the methods based on their research purpose.
  • Combine qualitative and quantitative methods fruitfully
  • Coordinate phases of a research process
  • Write a report on a research project
  • Distinguish between different forms of presentation of scientific results
  • Link the results of scientific projects to the state of the art
Attendance requirements

Students are required to attend at least 80% of the course sessions. If you miss a class, please inform us in advance!

Assessment

Students are expected to:

1. Participate in all courses (80% attendance)

2. Present quantitative papers 

3. Read and discuss literature on qualitative methods

4. Complete a mixed methods group project

 

Grading is based on your contributions:

  1. In-class contribution    10 points (individual)
  2. Exposé   10 points (group)
  3. Implementation of the mixed methods research project and frequent reports on progress  30 points (group)
  4. Quantitative paper presentations     5 points (group)
  5. Qualitative methods discussions       5 points (group)
  6. Interim and final presentations  10 points (group)
  7. Final report    30 points (group)

 

Overall, 100 points can be reached. Minimum points for each grade are as follows:
