“Compliance is expensive? Try non-compliance!”

Financial crimes, such as money laundering, circumvention of sanctions, and fraud, pose significant risks to international businesses. In the course, we will learn how to identify, prevent, and manage compliance risks to protect the company and its stakeholders. We will talk about compliance programs, risk-based-approach, KYC, sanctions regulations, whistleblowing, and other related topics. We will learn about the international legal framework, with the focus on the EU, and will discuss challenges of its implementation. We will also learn how compliance helps promote ethical business practices, ensuring long-term success and sustainability.  

Nowadays, expertise in financial crime prevention and compliance is in high demand. Complexity of requirements has been continuously increasing for various industries, including finance, logistics, real estate, and many others. The course will help students to navigate in the fast-changing field.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course you will:

  1. Understand the legal background regarding crime prevention internationally, and specifically in the EU.
  2. Obtain practical knowledge on how MNEs deal with crime prevention, as well as understand the academic view on the topic.
  3. Understand the status of financial sanctions in the EU and challenges in their implementation.
  4. Understand the EU anti-money laundering framework and learn how to apply the rules in practice.
  5. Be able to present about topics related to financial crime prevention (anti-money laundering, sanctions, fraud, data protection, special issues regarding cryptocurrencies, cyber security, financing of terrorism or other).
  6. Improve your presentation, communication and problem solving skills.
Attendance requirements

Sessions will take place in the class room. Minimum attendance is 80% of course hours, giving presentations is compulsory for every participant.

Teaching/learning method(s)

This course will combine various learning methods to deliver the different topics to the students. These will include readings, open class discussions, teamwork, case studies, exams and presentations.

Assessment

20% participation in discussions, feedback to other groups’ presentations.

40% group presentation.

40% written exam.
