Contents

CIC is a newly designed course which focuses on developing and practising communication skills in international business contexts. Students will learn and develop strategies for successful intercultural communication as well as reflecting on communicative aspects of international business scenarios.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, students will be able to:

  • Use English as a business lingua franca effectively
  • Communicate efficiently and effectively across a range of international settings
  • Understand and apply the concept of the Businesslike Zone
  • Research and present recent trends in international business contexts successfully
  • Write effective emails for an international audience
  • Participate successfully in international business meetings
  • Understand and apply strategies for building rapport in international business contexts
  • Build and maintain sustainable business relationships in intercultural settings
  • Develop and expand a shared repertoire of business vocabulary and collocations
Attendance requirements

As with all PI courses, attendance is a requirement to pass this course. In this course, students must not miss more than three sessions. 

Teaching/learning method(s)

The CIC classes are designed to be highly interactive so that students can develop and practice communicative competences for international contexts.

Assessment

Provided you satisfy the attendance requirement, your final score will be made up of the following elements:

  • Presentations: 25%
    • Group presentations held during class
  • Reflection and/or Peer Feedback: 10%
    • Specified by individual instructor
  • Home Exercises: 30%
    • 3 assignments at 10% each, to be done outside class
    • Specified by individual instructor
  • Quizzes on Canvas: 35%
    • Spread over the semester
    • Linked to course content
    • Specified by individual instructor
