Contents

The "Managing and Growing Startups" course is designed to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge to effectively manage and scale startups beyond the initial stages. This course goes beyond the foundational aspects of ideation and validation, into the critical challenges that arise during the growth phase, which are crucial for determining a startup's long-term success.

Students will work in teams to engage with real startup cases, providing strategic guidance and practical solutions to overcome growth-related challenges. The course integrates theoretical knowledge with practical application.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the "Managing and Growing Startups" course, students will be able to:

  • Search for, recognize, and evaluate growth opportunities in startups
  • Develop and implement strategic growth plans using appropriate methods and tools
  • Identify and address operational challenges in scaling startups
  • Lead and manage growing teams effectively
  • Enhance startup culture to support growth
  • Make data-driven decisions to navigate growth challenges
  • Build and leverage professional networks for startup growth
Attendance requirements

Students must attend at least 80% of all classes and events to successfully complete the course.

Teaching/learning method(s)

The "Managing and Growing Startups" course is an application-oriented project course. The aim is to deepen and extend the theoretical skills of the students through practical application to real cases with an expert lecturer from the Austrian start-up ecosystem, guest speakers with diverse backgrounds and extensive scaling experience, as well as an immersive experience through hands-on challenges for students. 

  • Self-study and theoretical input through lectures and group discussions
  • Workshops and practical input from industry experts
  • Team-based projects working on real startup growth challenges
  • Peer feedback and collaborative learning
Assessment

30% Challenge Performance (group grade, peer evaluation, more information provided at Kick-Off)

30% Final Essay (individual grade)

30% Active Participation (individual grade)

10% Reflection Reel (individual grade)
