Contents

This course provides students with the knowledge and tools necessary to develop a bachelor's thesis.

It will give students a brief background on the philosophy of science and focus on the research process, from identifying possible research topics to standards in sourcing and citing.

The course focuses on three key aspects:

  1. Beginning academic work - The philosophy of science and developing a research question.
  2. Organizing scientific work - The structure of a bachelor's thesis and the types of research available.
  3. Literature research - Where to find scientific articles and how to reference them in accordance with the norms.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students should:

  1. have an understanding of the philosophy of scientific work
  2. be able to distinguish between and compare different types of scientific work
  3. be able to formalize a research question
  4. understand the tools and norms available to referencing and citing
  5. undertake a scientific literature research
Attendance requirements

Attendance of the course sessions is mandatory. Students are allowed to miss up to 20% of the course time in justified cases.

Teaching/learning method(s)

The course aims to equip students with relevant knowledge as well as skills. It will combine interactive lecture elements with group and individual tasks. Throughout, students will be asked to tackle and prepare various tasks. Attendance and participation are expected throughout the course.

Assessment

Students will be assessed based on the following criteria as listed below:

  • 25 % team work
  • 50 % individual paper
  • 25 % exam

 

Prerequisites for participation and waiting lists

If you have a valid registration for the lecture, but will not participate, please deregister during the registration period of LPIS. Your place will be available for other students.

During the registration period, free places are filled according to the “first-come, first-served” principle.

After the end of the registration period, the number of places is increased and students on the waiting list will be registered for the lecture based on their progress in their studies.
