The course aims to provide students a deeper understanding of Central and Eastern Europe’s (CEE) recent history. The core element of the course is to strengthen students’ historical knowledge regarding CEE, by focussing on the various cultural, political and socioeconomic upheavals and changes that this region has undergone since the 19th century.
After completing the course, students will have an increased awareness of the historically evolved heterogeneity of CEE, its (self-) perceptions and role in the course of accelerated global changes since the 19th century and the importance of relating past and present in many CEE-countries. Students thus acquire a key competence for their multi-layered future professional engagement with CEE.
